The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has sacked his Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Udo Ekpenong.
A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh, in Uyo on Friday, confirmed Ekpenyong’s sacking.
“Emmanuel had effected a minor reshuffling of his cabinet. Ekpenyong was relieved of his portfolio with immediate effect.
“The government of Akwa Ibom State thanks Ekpenyong for his services to the state while serving as a member of the State Executive Council and wishes him well in his future endeavours,” the statement reads.
A source, however, told our correspondent that Emmanuel was not pleased with the commissioner over rampant cult killings, kidnappings and armed robberies in Ukanafun Local Government Area, where Ekpenyong hails from.
There are allegations that Ekpenyong also sponsored cult groups to foment troubles in the community
On November 19, 2017, Saturday PUNCH learnt that around 6am, four unidentified gunmen, suspected to be hired assassins, stormed the Ekpenyong’s residence in Ikot Oku Usung Village in Ukanafun, killing his younger sister and two others.
Our correspondent learnt that the area which used to be peaceful suddenly became a theatre of war following power tussles by some politicians from the place.
But a government house source, told our correspondent that the dismissal of the commissioner might be connected to a N1m take-off grant the ousted commissioner gave to local government chairmen in the state.
He said meagre sum caused the state governor serious embarrassment.
